INDIANAPOLIS—Tonight at Arsenal Tech High School, the Cathedral Irish erupted in the third quarter to put away the Decatur Central Hawks 59-14.
Led by senior running back Caleb Cross, the Irish pounded the Hawks as they ran for four touchdowns in a 35 point third quarter.
Cross’s 80-yard score with 9:13 left in the third swung all the momentum in favor of the Irish, and they would not let up from there.
Quarterback Max Bortenschlager scored twice in the quarter, once on the ground, and once on a 28-yard pass to John Preston.
When head coach Rick Streiff was asked about his junior quarterback, he had nothing but good remarks, “Well, he’s managing the game, and that’s really kind of what we do, we ask him to manage the game, and he’s done a nice job of it all year”.
Bortenschlager finished 3-9 for 65 yards and one score, but more importantly, no turnovers.
Decatur would fall behind in the second half, but quarterback Tommy Stevens and wide receiver Connor Ray were not at fault.
Stevens opened the game with a 10-yard touchdown scamper to take an early 6-point lead, finding Ray three times on the drive for 24 yards.
The two would hookup 14 times on the night, including a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
But with minimal protection, Stevens was under duress and was sacked 11 times on the night.
Stevens would finish 28-43 for 304 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, while Ray reeled in 14 balls for 133 yards.
The Irish continue look to continue their dynasty, as their fifth consecutive state championship is in sights.
